Job Summary:
Reporting to the Natural Resources Manager, the Natural Resources Program Technician will be required to work as a member of the Renewable Resource team, frequently under the supervision of the Renewable Resources Coordinator. The Natural Resources Program Technician will assist in carrying out a wide variety of fish and wildlife related research, restoration, and monitoring and human education, outreach and support responsibilities in the office and in the field. The incumbent will assist to communicate the duties and responsibilities of TTC citizens and the general public that are present both on and off Settlement Land, and perform other related duties.
Main Duties and Responsiblities:
- Assists in the design and implementation of projects that meet the objectives of the Department’s Research and Monitoring Strategy.
- Assists in providing supervision to summer student crews as they prepare for and carry out tasks assigned to them by the Natural Resources Manager or Renewable Resources Coordinator.
- Assists in public outreach and education activities relating to fish and wildlife, including engagement with the Teslin School.
- Assists in the collection, entry, and analysis of data and the creation of reports relating to fish and wildlife management.
- Assists the Natural Resources Manager, the Renewable Resources Coordinator, and researchers or contractors as required to conduct field work relating to fish and wildlife research, monitoring, and restoration.
- As required, attend meetings of the Teslin Renewable Resources Council and the Teslin Tlingit Renewable Resources Council to keep abreast of fish and wildlife management issues and provide advice and support on behalf of the Division.
- Assists in the operation and maintenance of permanent and temporary field camps, vehicles, boats, ATV’s and associated support equipment to ensure their reliable and safe operation during the conduct of field operations.
Education:
- Grade 12 or a Diploma from an accredited college in Renewable Resources or Fish and Wildlife related studies, or the equivalent in education, training and experience.
- Knowledge of fish and wildlife management principles and practices.
- Knowledge of history, cultures, traditional territory, goals and aspirations of the Teslin Tlingit First Nation.
- Thorough understanding of the goals and objectives of the Lands & Resources Department and the Renewable Resources Division.
- Familiarity with the Teslin Tlingit Final Agreement.
Conditions of Employment:
- valid Class 5 Yukon driver’s license
- Wilderness First Aid/CPR Certificates
- Proven back country/field experience
- Ability to work in physically demanding conditions
- Willingness to complete other job-related training
