Job Summary:
DDC is now seeking qualified candidates for the position of Business Development Officer (BDO) on a part-time (term) basis. This position will play a key role to advance business development priorities in Teslin through the new DDC Biz Hub, providing value-added support services to local businesses, contractors and entrepreneurs at the community level.
The ideal candidate has a strong working knowledge of how to deliver business development programming, is familiar with procurement processes on Teslin Tlingit Traditional Territory, understands the importance of business plans, has excellent communications skills and has a strong track record as a northern entrepreneur or has been part an organization that fosters business development in the Yukon before. Working under the direction of the General Manager, the BDO will help design, deliver and measure programs, services, projects and initiatives that foster local readiness for current and emerging business opportunities and procurement opportunities. Work will include project planning and implementation, identifying funding opportunities, and advancing partnerships that align with Deisleen Development Corporation’s strategic goals and objectives.
Key Responsibilities
a) Delivery of Business Development Programming:
- Promote and deliver DDC business development programs and services with the aim to address barriers affecting local entrepreneurs and to help increase local business activity through project participation and partnerships.
- Work with eligible applicants who may need assistance with accessing funding related to entrepreneurship, business planning, transferrable skills development and/or expansion of a small business;
- Facilitate the collection of performance measurement data and reporting.
b) Coordinating Local Engagement, Coaching and Procurement Readiness:
- Facilitate inclusive engagement processes with citizens, community organizations, and businesses.
- Support the development and review of community development plans, including strategic plans, sectoral plans, and local action plans.
- Promote readiness for procurement and participation in local projects.
- Assist with the collection, evaluation and reporting on economic data to help support informed decision making and enhance DDC’s approach to making targeted investments in the community.
c) Leading Project Design and Pathfinding Support Services:
- Assisting entrepreneurs with funding applications and fostering the development of business plans
- Enhancing understanding and awareness of federal and territorial programs as well as local coaching options and solutions
- Monitor progress and prepare reports on milestones, outcomes, and community impact.
d) Promoting Available Funding & Business Development Resources:
- Research and identify relevant funding sources (territorial, federal, private).
- Assist entrepreneurs with funding applications and prepare supporting documentation for project funding.
- Track and report on grants and project expenditures as required by funders.
e) Building Partnership & Relationships:
- Collaborate with various Teslin Tlingit Council departments, other levels of government, industry partners, and community groups to leverage resources and align objectives.
- Represent DDC at contractor meetings, assist with engagement and help organize partnerships between local stakeholders.
Administrative & Reporting Duties
- Maintain accurate records of activities, documentation and information for engagement/reporting purposes.
- Maintain the Teslin Business Directory.
- Prepare information for use in briefing notes, reports, and presentations for the General Manager and Board of Directors.
- Ensure compliance with all legal, financial, and reporting obligations.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- Post-secondary education and/or strong working knowledge of Business Development or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Minimum of 2–3 years experience in program delivery, project coordination, community engagement, or development work, preferably in a First Nation or northern context.
- Strong communication, writing, and facilitation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Knowledge of funding sources and proposal development.
- Understanding of Teslin Tlingit culture, governance, and community priorities is a strong asset.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and willingness to travel as required.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Extensive experience in the development of funding applications
- A strong working knowledge of how to deliver programs and services at the community level
- Knowledge of local community development initiatives, funding agreements, procurement processes and not-for-profit operations

- Knowledge of Teslin Tlingit Council’s governance structure, our community, heritage and culture, social structure, language and traditions and the significance of Haa Kusteeyí to our community is essential to succeeding in this position

Working Conditions
- Position is mostly in an office environment, but will involve site visits to other offices in the Teslin area and/or in Whitehorse in support of DDC meetings and/or projects.
- Although this is primarily an office position, the ideal candidate will be able to work in a fast paced, project-orientated environment that requires some field work.
Wages
Wages for this position are commensurate with experience, ranging from $40-$45 per hour.
