Overview:

Lightning Fire Management (LFM) is a subsidiary of the Deisleen Development Corporation and holds an annual service contract for Fire Suppression with the Yukon Government’s Wildland Fire Management (WFM). The contract is to provide a Type 1 Initial Attack Crew, proudly called the Teslin Echo Fire Crew, comprised of a crew leader, 2-3 crew members/trainees and a service vehicle. Wildland Fire Management remains a territorial-managed service and the crew is deployed by WFM to fight fires where and when needed.

With the wildfire season rapidly approaching Lightning Fire Management is now seeking qualified individuals to join our team of Type 1 Crewmembers for the upcoming 2025 wildfire season. Up to three Type-1 Initial Attack Crewmember positions (two full-time and one auxiliary/trainee position) are available.

Responsibilities:

Type 1 Crewmembers are deployed from May until September, and will be primarily stationed in Whitehorse but are expected to travel to various communities depending on wildfire locations.

The Crewmember is a member of a crew that is primarily responsible for initial attack operations on wildfires and sustained action on campaign fires. This position could be assigned to respond to other fires, disasters or emergencies within the Yukon and may be exported within Canada. During periods of low fire activity the incumbent will be assigned to complete other projects such as grounds maintenance, repair of buildings and equipment, FireSmart projects and other related duties.

  • Suppression of wildfire and response to all risk incidents – Responds to wildfire and other public safety emergencies (e.g. floods, severe weather events, natural and human caused disasters) in accordance with established policy and procedure. This position provides front line support for the operational and logistical functions of any incident as directed. Crew Members may be assigned to provide fire suppression service to other regions and outside the territory under the provisions of the Mutual Aid Resource Sharing (MARS) Can/US and NW Compact agreements.
  • Maintain a state of readiness as per the daily alert level – Checking, testing and servicing suppression equipment as assigned and reporting deficiencies or suggesting alternate solutions to the Crew Leader. Making arrangements for dispatch to an incident or export by keeping personal pack and equipment in a state of readiness. Monitoring current weather and forecasted conditions and reporting changes to the Crew Leader.
  • Supervision of EFF or other staff – Crew Members may be required to supervise Emergency Fire Fighters (EFF) when assigned to an incident or while at the fire centre.
  • Maintenance and trouble shooting of fire suppression equipment in the field and while at a fire centre – Checking the condition of personal protective equipment (eg. nomex clothing, hard hat, goggles, hearing protection) and fireline equipment (eg. fire fighting equipment, government/rental vehicles, camp equipment, power and hand tools) for service and scheduled maintenance.
  • Participation in training opportunities and assignments to maintain, supplement and compliment position – Periodic mandatory certification training is required of all Crew Members to maintain current certification level. This will include: aircraft safety training, WHMIS, TDG, fitness testing, first aid and others as identified. Training to meet specific incident command and specialist duties will be available.
  • Ensure the safety of self and others by adherence to established protocols – While on the fire line, Crew Members will constantly monitor fire behaviour and weather conditions and report changes from the expected conditions to their crew. Adherence to safety protocols (WATCH OUT, LCES, 10 Standard Fire Orders) and inspecting for unsafe conditions or misuse of required PPE. Responding to the instructions of the Crew Leader regarding, suppression tactics, strategies and providing input to health and safety issues and maintaining situational awareness.
  • Completion of other assigned tasks and duties – Start up and shut down of facilities (warehouse, lookouts, bunk house, etc.), construction and maintenance projects in and around buildings and grounds (mowing lawns, painting, brush clearing, repair work, etc.), Fire Smart and fuel modification projects are examples of jobs that may be in periods of low fire activity.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be 18 years or older;
  • Have a valid Class 5 driver’s license;
  • Hold a valid Standard First Aid Certification and CPR “C”;
  • Successful completion of the Yukon Crew Member Training Course;
  • Transportation of Dangerous Good Certificate – Air and Ground modes;
  • Successfully pass and maintain Type 1 Fitness Standards (WFX-FIT) test and meet the National exchange standard and Yukon Standard as well.
  • Note: Applicants who do not have all of the above certification are encouraged to inquire about the upcoming training opportunities in these areas.

Candidates Should Have:

  • Ability to work effectively and safely in a team
  • Certified as medically fit for forest fire fighting duties
  • Have experience living or working in a wilderness environment.
  • Ability to gain certification as a Crew Member as per current Yukon Wildland Fire Incident Certification Manual.
  • Lightning Fire Management will assist applicants in receiving the required training for Certification

Compensation:

Wages are commensurate with experience. Starting wage is $31.42 base hourly rate.

Working Conditions:

This position is frequently exposed to a wide variety of working locations and conditions. Exposure to extreme heat, smoke, open flame and other environmental hazards will be present and could provide opportunity for severe injury or death. Crew Members travel to work locations in vehicles, aircraft, ATV, boat or on foot, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.

Crewleaders and Crewmembers will be expected to maintain, utilize or work along with a variety of tools and equipment for the purpose of incident management and for the construction of fire lines, helipads, campsites etc. This may include; chainsaws, brush saws, hand / power tools, high pressure pumps and hose, heavy equipment, ignition equipment, firing devices, and carpentry tools.

The position is expected to work from remote wilderness camps with limited services for extended periods of time including long shifts and odd hours. This may include weekends and holidays. Length of deployment could be up to 19 days in duration.

Travel away from the home location is expected on short notice. Preparations are expected for deployment across Yukon, Canada and the USA.
