Job Summary:

Teslin Environmental Services (TES) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Deisleen Development Corporation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to community development priorities in Teslin. TES provides high-quality environmental monitoring and consulting services, emphasizing local capacity building and environmental stewardship. As part of our programming, TES operates the Land Treatment Facility (LTF) in Teslin and delivers environmental monitoring services on a range of community sites and projects, including the Nisutlin Bay Bridge Project.

Teslin Environmental Services is seeking a skilled Manager to lead a dedicated team in the development and delivery of local environmental monitoring programs and services. The successful candidate will guide day-to-day operations, oversee environmental monitoring projects, ensure regulatory and funding compliance, and support the development of TES staff and promote mentorship opportunities for local youth. This position requires strong leadership, project management expertise, and a commitment to the meeting local, regional and territorial environmental standards while establishing and maintaining partnerships that support the long-term sustainability of TES.

This is a part-time, seasonal (6 months) position to start, with the possibility of an extension.

Key Responsibilities

a) Environmental Monitoring & Program Oversight:

  • Lead and support the planning, coordination, and implementation of environmental monitoring programs including water quality, wildlife, fish habitat, and land use.
  • Ensuring adherence to all relevant environmental laws and regulations.
  • Creating and implementing environmental programs, policies, and procedures. 
  • Overseeing and managing the environmental services budget. 
  • Assessing and mitigating environmental risks and costs. 

b) Project Management:

  • Manage multiple environmental projects simultaneously, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget.
  • Develop and implement work plans, budgets, schedules, and reporting mechanisms.
  • Coordinate with technical experts, contractors, and funding agencies to support successful project outcomes.

c) Human Resources Management:

  • Supervise, mentor, and support a team of environmental technicians and administrative staff.
  • Foster a positive, safe, and inclusive work environment that supports employee development and capacity building.
  • Advise the General Manager of Deisleen Development Corporation (DDC) on recruitment, training, performance evaluations, and staff scheduling.

d) Reporting & Communication:

  • Prepare high-quality reports, proposals, funding applications, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure timely submission of regulatory reports, grant reports, and other deliverables.
  • Maintain strong communication and collaboration with the Teslin Tlingit Council, government agencies, and community members.

Administrative & Reporting Duties

  • Maintain accurate records of project documentation and community engagement activities.
  • Prepare briefing notes, reports, and presentations for the General Manager of Deisleen Development Corporation (DDC) and the TES and DDC Board of Directors.

Qualifications

 The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in environmental project management, preferably in a northern or Indigenous context.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory experience, with strong team-building and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and report-writing skills.
  • Experience working with Indigenous governments, values, and protocols is a strong asset.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and willingness to travel to field locations
  • First Aid certification is an asset.
  • Understanding of Teslin Tlingit culture, governance, and community priorities is a strong asset.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Familiarity with Yukon environmental regulations and permitting processes.
  • Experience in community-based monitoring or traditional ecological knowledge integration.
  • Knowledge of Teslin Tlingit Council governance, culture, and priorities.
  • Experience in the administration of Health and Safety protocols.

  • Knowledge of Teslin Tlingit Council’s governance structure, our community, heritage and culture, social structure, language and traditions and the significance of Haa Kusteeyí to our community is essential to succeeding in this position

  • Knowledge of the community and Teslin Tlingit Council clan system and structures.

Working Conditions

  • Position is mostly in an office environment, but will involve site visits to other offices in the Teslin area and/or in Whitehorse in support of DDC meetings and/or initiatives.
  • Although this is primarily an office position, the ideal candidate will be able to work in a fast paced, project-orientated environment that requires some field work.
  • This is an hourly paid position that will average around 20 hours per week

Wages

Wages for this position are commensurate with experience, ranging from $42 to $50 per hour.
