Overview:

Lightning Fire Management (LFM) is a subsidiary of the Deisleen Development Corporation and holds an annual service contract for Fire Suppression with the Yukon Government’s Wildland Fire Management (WFM). The contract is to provide a Type 1 Initial Attack Crew, proudly called the Teslin Echo Fire Crew, comprised of a crew leader, 2-3 crew members/trainees and a service vehicle. Wildland Fire Management remains a territorial-managed service and the crew is deployed by WFM to fight fires where and when needed.

With the wildfire season rapidly approaching Lightning Fire Management is now seeking qualified individuals to join our team for the 2025 wildfire season.

Responsibilities:

This position will lead a team of 2 Crewmembers and 1 auxiliary/trainee position from May until September, and will be primarily stationed in Whitehorse and deployed to various communities depending on wildfire locations.

The Fire Crewleader is responsible for the leadership, supervision, motivation, organization, training, and safety of a fire crew that is primarily responsible for initial attack operations and sustained action on wildfires. This position may be assigned to lead a crew responding to other disasters or emergencies within the Yukon. During periods of low fire activity, the incumbent will supervise a crew assigned to other projects such as grounds maintenance, repair of buildings and equipment, Fire Smart projects and other duties as required.

  • Supervision – Supervises, leads, organizes, motivates and trains two Crew Members as part of an initial attack crew. Supervision of larger crews including initial attack personnel, Emergency Firefighters, volunteer firefighters, First Nations’ Contract crewmembers, and others may be required. May directly supervise 3 to 25 firefighters, contractors and personnel involved in fire suppression activity. Monitors and evaluates the performance of crews and assists the Regional Protection Officer in, setting objectives, conducting employee performance reviews. Assists in scheduling the crew.
  • Suppression of wildfire and response to all risk incidents – Responds to wildfire and other public safety emergencies (e.g. floods, severe weather events, natural and human caused disasters) in accordance with established policy and procedure. Provides front-line support for the operational and logistical functions of any Wildland fire or incident. Assesses values at risk (life, property, and resources), develops appropriate response strategies and tactics, and deploying assigned resources. Monitors current weather and forecasted conditions reporting changes to the Duty Officer. May be assigned to fire suppression activities to other regions and outside Yukon under provisions of the Mutual Aid Resource Sharing (MARS) Can/US and NW Compact agreements. May be assigned other roles within Incident Command based on certification. Works closely with other branches of Protective Services.
  • Maintain a state of readiness – Ensures that crew and equipment is prepared for dispatch to an incident or export based on alerts. Checks, tests, repairs and services suppression equipment, and reports deficiencies to the Regional Protection Officer.
  • Safety Management – Monitors work practices and field operations to ensure compliance with regulatory safety legislation. Corrects non-compliance providing written and verbal safety-related incident and occurrence reports to the Regional Duty Officer or Regional Protection Officer. Ensures daily safety briefings are conducted and recorded in accordance with Safety Management System (SMS). Assists with implementing, monitoring and making recommendations for improvements to the Standard Operating Procedures and Safe Work Practices.
  • Administrative Documentation – Completes documentation in pre-suppression and suppression periods (e.g. time sheets, travel claims, training requests, crew evaluations, equipment loss/damage reports, fire reports, fire diaries, equipment logs, accident/incident reports, incident action plans, helicopter load calculation reports, fire orders, equipment inventory control reports, fire situation reports).
  • Participation in training and certification – Participates in mandatory certification and training to maintain current certification level including aircraft management, fire behaviour, ICS, WHMIS, TDG, fitness testing, first aid and others as required. Participates in training to meet incident command positions and specialist duties. Maintains and submits training records for assigned personnel. Assists with planning and delivery of training courses in pre-suppression and suppression activities. Responsible for performing fireline performance and Skills, Knowledge, Abilities assessments on assigned resources.
  • Compliance and Monitoring – May be dispatched to investigate non-compliance of the Forest Protection Act or Regulations by monitoring burn permits, and assists a Forest Officer with the documentation of non-compliance burning. During smoke investigations, or on dispatches to initial attack fires, conducts the initial investigation and document by identifying and securing the point of ignition fire, identifying any witnesses or vehicles leaving the scene particularly in the case of suspicious or human-caused fires.
  • Resource management Assists supervisor, other staff or departments in resource management activities when requested.
  • Physical Fitness & Health– leads and motivates crewmembers to participate and maintain the National Type 1 Firefighter Fitness Standards, including proper nutrition and health and wellness activities.
  • Fire Smart – Participates in FireSmart activities such as fuel management treatments, hazard reduction, prescribed fire, maintenance of FireSmarted areas, and assists with layout of FireSmart during low hazard periods.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be 18 years or older;
  • Have a valid Class 5 driver’s license;
  • Hold a valid Standard First Aid Certification and CPR “C”;
  • Successful completion of the Yukon Crew Member Training Course;
  • Succcessfully pass and maintain Type 1 Fitness Standards (WFX-FIT) test and meet the National exchange standard and Yukon Standard as well.

Candidates Should Have:

  • Ability to work effectively and safely in a team
  • Certified as medically fit for forest fire fighting duties
  • Have experience living or working in a wilderness environment.
  • Ability to gain certification as a Crew Member as per current Yukon Wildland Fire Incident Certification Manual.
  • Lightning Fire Management will assist applicants in receiving the required training for Certification

Compensation:

Wages are commensurate with experience. Starting wage is $36.30 base hourly rate.

Working Conditions:

This position is frequently exposed to a wide variety of working locations and conditions. Exposure to extreme heat, smoke, open flame and other environmental hazards will be present and could provide opportunity for severe injury or death. Crew Members travel to work locations in vehicles, aircraft, ATV, boat or on foot, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.

Crewleaders and Crewmembers will be expected to maintain, utilize or work along with a variety of tools and equipment for the purpose of incident management and for the construction of fire lines, helipads, campsites etc. This may include; chainsaws, brush saws, hand / power tools, high pressure pumps and hose, heavy equipment, ignition equipment, firing devices, and carpentry tools.

The position is expected to work from remote wilderness camps with limited services for extended periods of time including long shifts and odd hours. This may include weekends and holidays. Length of deployment could be up to 19 days in duration.

Travel away from the home location is expected on short notice. Preparations are expected for deployment across Yukon, Canada and the USA.
